Do you want to shape the future of critical International Studies? Would you like to see the inner workings of an academic journal? Then apply to join Millennium: Journal of International Studies as Editor or Deputy Editor for its Vol. 56!
The current Vol. 55 editorial team (Anastasia Barclay, Kazimier Lim, Madita Standke-Erdmann) will host three short information webinars on Zoom in the weeks leading up to the elections. They will explain how the journal works, what the editorial roles involve, how to apply, and answer any questions you may have (e.g., “How do I plan a Special Issue?”). These sessions are also a chance to meet others interested in applying and to form an editorial team.
Why join? Here is what our current editors say:
- Millennium is IR theory’s most prestigious student-run journal with a long and star-studded legacy. Acting as (Deputy) Editor is an excellent opportunity to join an international community of like-minded scholars who represent all stages of the academic career ladder.
- Besides day-to-day editorial skills, Editors will develop a wide range of professional and academic skills, including (but by no means limited to): leadership and team management; decision-making; budget proposals and management; Symposium organisation and facilitation; stakeholder management and engagement; quality assurance; academic discernment skills; and publishing industry acumen and technical know-how.
- Deputy Editors will develop their reading and feedback skills, will broaden and deepen their understanding of IR’s many literatures, and will manage journal-reviewer relations.
- The Communications Officer will develop a range of professional and academic skills, including but not limited to drafting and leading the journal’s public engagement strategy – in coordination with the editorial team, skills in science communication disseminating publications to a broader audience, developing and driving engagement across four social media platforms, amongst others.
- The entire Vol. 56 team will be supported at every stage by the current Vol. 55 team in their capacity as Associate Editors.
All sessions and the election use the same Zoom Link: https://lse.zoom.us/j/88544342288.
- Session 1: Wednesday, 14 October from 10:00am to 11:00am
- Session 2: Tuesday, 20 October from 1:00pm to 2:00pm
- Session 3: Monday, 9 November from 4:00pm to 5:00pm
- Elections: Thursday, 19 November from 1:00pm to 3:00pm
How to join the editorial team:
Prospective Editors for Vol. 56 apply in teams of three. To be eligible, each needs to be a PGR from the University of London. Central to the application is your proposed Special Issue theme. The elections involve a 15-20 minute team presentation that includes individual introductions, and around 10 minutes on the rationale behind your proposed Special Issue theme.
Deputy Editors apply individually and should be prepared to speak for 5-10 minutes about their background, their interest in Millennium, and what they might like to achieve in their role as DE. They can be PGR’s or Master’s level students from the University of London.
How to apply for the role of Communications Officer:
Interested candidates should email us at millennium@lse.ac.uk to arrange an interview with the current Vol. 55 team. Experience in similar roles is desirable but not necessary – excellent written communication skills are a must. You should be prepared to discuss why you are interested in the journal, any relevant experience you have, and any ideas you have to increase the journal’s engagement across multiple social media platforms.
All roles advertised in this email are paid, 12-month positions. Editors will stay on after their 12-month tenure to act as Associate Editor for a further year.
If you have any further questions, or would like to be put in touch with other individuals interested in forming an Editorial team, please email us at millennium@lse.ac.uk. If you have already formed a team, the Vol. 55 editors are more than happy to arrange a meeting to talk through any questions. We look forward to hearing from you!
